Animal study

Gastric pentadecapeptide BPC 157 and short bowel syndrome in rats

Sever M, Klicek R, Radic B, et al. Digestive Diseases and Sciences 2009;54:2070-2083.

What it found

After a large part of the small intestine was removed, untreated rats lost weight while treated rats gained it. Treated rats also had taller intestinal villi, a thicker gut wall and stronger surgical joins.

Limitations

Rats only, single research group. A surgical model in rats may not reflect short bowel syndrome in people.
