Efficacy of ipamorelin, a novel ghrelin mimetic, in a rodent model of postoperative ileus
Venkova K, Mann W, Nelson R, et al. Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics 2009;329:1110-1116.
What it found
A single 1 mg/kg dose shortened the time to first bowel movement after surgery. Repeated dosing (0.1 or 1 mg/kg) increased stool output, food intake and weight gain over 48 hours.
Limitations
Male rats with a surgical model of ileus. Results did not translate into a significant benefit in the later human trial.
