Randomised controlled trial

Prospective, randomized, controlled, proof-of-concept study of the Ghrelin mimetic ipamorelin for the management of postoperative ileus in bowel resection patients

Beck DE, Sweeney WB, McCarter MD, et al. International Journal of Colorectal Disease 2014;29:1527-1534.

What it found

Median time to first tolerated solid meal was 25.3 hours with ipamorelin vs 32.6 hours with placebo (p = 0.15, not significant). No significant differences in the key or secondary efficacy measures. Any treatment-emergent adverse event: 87.5% with ipamorelin vs 94.8% with placebo.

Limitations

Small proof-of-concept phase 2 trial (117 enrolled, 114 analysed) with a broad mix of underlying conditions. Hospital patients after surgery, not healthy people.
