Randomised controlled trial

Triple hormone receptor agonist retatrutide for metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease: a randomized phase 2a trial

Sanyal AJ, Kaplan LM, Frias JP, et al. Nature Medicine 2024;30:2037-2048.

What it found

In participants of the phase 2 obesity trial who had fatty liver (at least 10% liver fat), liver fat fell by 42.9% (1 mg) to 82.4% (12 mg) at 24 weeks vs +0.3% on placebo. Normal liver fat levels were reached by 86% on 12 mg vs 0% on placebo. The fall in liver fat tracked weight loss.

Limitations

Small substudy measuring liver fat on MRI, not liver inflammation or scarring on biopsy. Short term.
