Randomised controlled trial

Phase 3 Trial of Semaglutide in Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatohepatitis

Sanyal AJ, Newsome PN, Kliers I, et al. New England Journal of Medicine 2025;392:2089-2099.

What it found

In the first 800 participants with biopsy-confirmed MASH and moderate or advanced fibrosis, liver inflammation resolved without worsening scarring in 62.9% vs 34.3% on placebo, and scarring improved without worsening inflammation in 36.8% vs 22.4%. Mean weight change was -10.5% vs -2.0%.

Limitations

Interim results based on liver biopsy findings; whether this leads to fewer cases of cirrhosis, liver failure or death is still being studied in the ongoing part of the trial.
