Effects of Semaglutide on Chronic Kidney Disease in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Perkovic V, Tuttle KR, Rossing P, et al. New England Journal of Medicine 2024;391:109-121.

What it found

Major kidney events (kidney failure, a 50% fall in kidney function, or death from kidney or cardiovascular causes) were 24% less frequent with semaglutide (hazard ratio 0.76). Kidney function declined more slowly, and cardiovascular events and deaths from any cause were also lower. Serious adverse events: 49.6% vs 53.8%.

Limitations

People with type 2 diabetes and chronic kidney disease only. Trials stopped early can overestimate the size of a benefit.
