Risk of Gastrointestinal Adverse Events Associated With Glucagon-Like Peptide-1 Receptor Agonists for Weight Loss

Sodhi M, Rezaeianzadeh R, Kezouh A, et al. JAMA 2023;330:1795-1797.

What it found

In a US health insurance claims database, people using semaglutide or liraglutide for weight loss had a higher risk of pancreatitis, bowel obstruction and gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying) than people using the weight-loss drug bupropion-naltrexone. Biliary disease was not significantly different.

Limitations

Short research letter based on claims data, so diagnoses are not confirmed and confounding is possible. These events were rare in absolute terms.
