Oral Semaglutide and Cardiovascular Outcomes in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes
Husain M, Birkenfeld AL, Donsmark M, et al. New England Journal of Medicine 2019;381:841-851.
What it found
Major cardiovascular events occurred in 3.8% on oral semaglutide vs 4.8% on placebo (hazard ratio 0.79, confidence interval crossing 1), which met the goal of showing no excess risk. Gastrointestinal side effects leading to stopping treatment were more common with oral semaglutide.
Limitations
A safety trial: short follow-up and too few events to show a benefit or harm with confidence. The lower death rates seen were not a primary test and need confirmation.
