Lincoff AM, Brown-Frandsen K, Colhoun HM, et al. New England Journal of Medicine 2023;389:2221-2232.

What it found

In adults aged 45 or over with existing cardiovascular disease, overweight or obesity and no diabetes, cardiovascular death, non-fatal heart attack or non-fatal stroke occurred in 6.5% on semaglutide vs 8.0% on placebo (hazard ratio 0.80). Side effects led to stopping the drug in 16.6% vs 8.2%.

Limitations

Only people with established heart or vessel disease; results do not apply directly to people with obesity but no cardiovascular disease. Absolute difference in events was about 1.5 percentage points over more than 3 years.
