Effects of growth hormone-releasing hormone on cognitive function in adults with mild cognitive impairment and healthy older adults: results of a controlled trial
Baker LD, Barsness SM, Borson S, et al. Archives of Neurology 2012;69:1420-1429.
What it found
A favourable effect on combined cognitive scores (p = 0.03), similar in healthy older adults and those with mild cognitive impairment, driven mainly by executive function. IGF-1 rose 117% and body fat fell 7.4%. Fasting insulin rose 35% in the group with mild cognitive impairment. Adverse events (mild) in 68% vs 36% with placebo.
Limitations
Single centre; 137 of 152 completed. Cognitive gains were modest and measured over 20 weeks only; not a test of dementia prevention.
