Randomised controlled trial

Effect of tesamorelin on visceral fat and liver fat in HIV-infected patients with abdominal fat accumulation: a randomized clinical trial

Stanley TL, Feldpausch MN, Oh J, et al. JAMA 2014;312:380-389.

What it found

Visceral fat changed -34 cm² with tesamorelin vs +8 cm² with placebo, and liver fat fell (net effect -2.9% in lipid-to-water ratio). Fasting glucose rose more with tesamorelin at 2 weeks, but glucose differences at 6 months were not significant.

Limitations

Small single-centre study (48 received the study drug). Liver fat was measured by imaging, not biopsy.
