Long-term safety and effects of tesamorelin, a growth hormone-releasing factor analogue, in HIV patients with abdominal fat accumulation

Falutz J, Allas S, Mamputu JC, et al. AIDS 2008;22:1719-1728.

What it found

Side effect rates in the extension were similar to the first 26 weeks, and glucose changes over 52 weeks were not clinically significant. Visceral fat stayed about 18% below baseline with 52 weeks of treatment, and triglycerides fell by 51 mg/dl. Visceral fat came back in people switched to placebo.

Limitations

Extension of the first phase 3 trial (Falutz 2007); n is the number entering the extension. Only people with HIV. Effects did not last after stopping.
