Effects of tesamorelin (TH9507), a growth hormone-releasing factor analog, in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients with excess abdominal fat: a pooled analysis of two multicenter, double-blind placebo-controlled phase 3 trials with safety extension data
Falutz J, Mamputu JC, Potvin D, et al. Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism 2010;95:4291-4304.
What it found
At 26 weeks visceral fat changed -24 vs +2 cm² (placebo-adjusted effect -15.4%), with no significant change in abdominal fat under the skin. Triglycerides and cholesterol ratio fell, body image improved and IGF-1 rose by 108 ng/ml. Reductions were maintained at 52 weeks in those who continued. No clinically meaningful glucose differences.
Limitations
Pooled analysis of the two phase 3 trials, so not independent evidence. Only people with HIV. Funding is not stated in the abstract.
