Effects of tesamorelin, a growth hormone-releasing factor, in HIV-infected patients with abdominal fat accumulation: a randomized placebo-controlled trial with a safety extension
Falutz J, Potvin D, Mamputu JC, et al. Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes 2010;53:311-322.
What it found
Visceral fat fell 10.9% with tesamorelin vs 0.6% with placebo at 6 months. Trunk fat, waist size and belly-related body image improved; fat under the skin and in the limbs did not change, and glucose measures did not change. Visceral fat was about 18% lower in those continuing for 12 months, but the gain was rapidly lost in those switched to placebo.
Limitations
Only people with HIV on antiretroviral therapy with excess abdominal fat. Did not measure heart disease or other hard outcomes.
