Observational

The effect of thymosin α1 on mortality of critical COVID-19 patients: A multicenter retrospective study

Sun Q, Xie J, Zheng R, et al. International Immunopharmacology 2021;90:107143.

What it found

Before adjustment, 28-day mortality was lower in patients given thymosin alpha-1 (41.3% vs 60.6%). After propensity score matching for baseline differences (522 patients), it was 51.0% versus 52.9%, with no significant difference. A possible benefit in men was seen in one subgroup analysis.

Limitations

Retrospective records from 19 Chinese hospitals early in 2020. Treatment was not randomised, so unmeasured differences between groups may remain.
