Efficacy of thymosin alpha1 in patients with chronic hepatitis B: a randomized, controlled trial
Chien RN, Liaw YF, Chen TC, et al. Hepatology 1998;27:1383-1387.
What it found
At 18 months, complete viral response (loss of HBV DNA and HBeAg) was 40.6% after 26 weeks of treatment, 26.5% after 52 weeks and 9.4% in untreated controls. Rates were similar at the end of treatment and rose afterwards. No responder cleared HBsAg. Liver biopsies improved; no significant side effects.
Limitations
No placebo; the control group was simply untreated. Small groups, single centre. The longer course did not do better than the shorter one.
