Thymosin alpha1 treatment of chronic hepatitis B: results of a phase III multicentre, randomized, double-blind and placebo-controlled study

Mutchnick MG, Lindsay KL, Schiff ER, et al. Journal of Viral Hepatitis 1999;6:397-403.

What it found

Complete response was seen in 14% on thymosin alpha-1 and 4% on placebo (P = 0.084), and sustained loss of HBV DNA with negative HBeAg in 25% versus 13% (P < 0.11). The authors concluded the results did not confirm earlier reports of benefit.

Limitations

Fewer than 100 patients, so modest differences could be missed. HBeAg-positive patients only.
