Randomised controlled trial

Combination therapy with thymosin alpha1 and interferon for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C infection: a randomized, placebo-controlled double-blind trial

Sherman KE, Sjogren M, Creager RL, et al. Hepatology 1998;27:1128-1135.

What it found

End-of-treatment normalisation of liver enzymes occurred in 37.1% on the combination, 16.2% on interferon alone and 2.7% on placebo; viral clearance was 37.1% versus 18.9%. Sustained responses after stopping were 14.2% and 8.1%.

Limitations

Interferon-era trial; hepatitis C is now managed with direct-acting antivirals, so the results have little current relevance. Sustained responses were low.
