Randomised controlled trial

The efficacy of thymosin alpha 1 for severe sepsis (ETASS): a multicenter, single-blind, randomized and controlled trial

Wu J, Zhou L, Liu J, et al. Critical Care 2013;17:R8.

What it found

28-day death rates were 26.0% with thymosin alpha-1 and 35.0% in controls (relative risk 0.74, 95% CI 0.54 to 1.02; P = 0.062 unstratified, 0.049 by log-rank). The immune marker mHLA-DR improved more on days 3 and 7. No serious drug-related adverse events were recorded.

Limitations

Single-blind, no placebo, six centres in China. The mortality result was borderline. A later, larger double-blind trial did not confirm a benefit.
