Animal study

Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and especially IGF-I variants are anabolic in dexamethasone-treated rats

Tomas FM, Knowles SE, Owens PC, et al. Biochemical Journal 1992;282:91-97.

What it found

IGF-1 partly reversed steroid-induced weight loss and nitrogen loss. LR3 and des(1-3)IGF-I were about 2.5 times more potent than IGF-1, even though LR3 binds the IGF-1 receptor about 3 times less well. The IGF peptides increased gut weight by up to 45% and affected muscle protein synthesis and breakdown.

Limitations

Young male rats (150 g) in a steroid-induced catabolic model; one week only.
