IGF-I variants which bind poorly to IGF-binding proteins show more potent and prolonged hypoglycaemic action than native IGF-I in pigs and marmoset monkeys

Tomas FM, Walton PE, Dunshea FR, et al. Journal of Endocrinology 1997;155:377-386.

What it found

The variants were 2-3 times more potent than IGF-1 at lowering blood sugar, and their effect lasted much longer: total sugar lowering over 4 hours was about 4-8 times greater. LR3 was the only variant that lowered plasma amino acids more than IGF-1.

Limitations

Single doses in pigs and marmosets. LR3 was tested only in pigs. The authors were exploring these variants as possible add-ons to insulin.
