MOTS-c is an exercise-induced mitochondrial-encoded regulator of age-dependent physical decline and muscle homeostasis
Reynolds JC, Lai RW, Woodhead JST, et al. Nature Communications 2021;12:470.
What it found
Young, middle-aged and old mice given MOTS-c ran longer on a treadmill. Intermittent treatment started late in life was followed by better physical capacity and healthspan measures. In a small human component, exercise raised MOTS-c levels in muscle and blood; no human received the peptide.
Limitations
Efficacy results are in mice. The human part only measured the body's own MOTS-c after exercise.
