Observational

A pro-diabetogenic mtDNA polymorphism in the mitochondrial-derived peptide, MOTS-c

Zempo H, Kim SJ, Fuku N, et al. Aging 2021;13:1692-1717.

What it found

An East Asian mitochondrial DNA variant (m.1382A>C) changes one amino acid of MOTS-c (K14Q). In three cohorts, men carrying it had more type 2 diabetes, mainly if they were physically inactive; women did not. In male mice, the normal peptide improved weight and glucose tolerance on a high-fat diet, while the variant form did not.

Limitations

The human part is an association study and cannot prove cause. Effect seen only in males. One author declared consulting and shares in CohBar.
