Randomised controlled trial

An effect on the subjective sexual response in premenopausal women with sexual arousal disorder by bremelanotide (PT-141), a melanocortin receptor agonist

Diamond LE, Earle DC, Heiman JR, et al. Journal of Sexual Medicine 2006;3:628-638.

What it found

More women reported moderate or high sexual desire after bremelanotide than after placebo. Among women who attempted intercourse within 24 hours, more were satisfied with their arousal after bremelanotide. Measured vaginal blood flow during erotic videos did not change.

Limitations

Only 18 women, single dose, crossover design. Several outcomes were trends rather than clear differences. Run by the developer.
