The mitochondrial-targeted compound SS-31 re-energizes ischemic mitochondria by interacting with cardiolipin
Birk AV, Liu S, Soong Y, et al. Journal of the American Society of Nephrology 2013;24:1250-1261.
What it found
SS-31 bound tightly to cardiolipin and blocked cytochrome c from damaging it. In rats given SS-31 before kidney ischaemia, mitochondrial structure was preserved, energy (ATP) recovered faster, and kidney injury was reduced.
Limitations
Rats and lab experiments. From the laboratory that discovered SS-31.
