Tirzepatide for the Treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea and Obesity

Malhotra A, Grunstein RR, Fietze I, et al. New England Journal of Medicine 2024;391:1193-1205.

What it found

Two trials in adults with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnoea and obesity, one without and one with CPAP. Breathing interruptions per hour (apnea-hypopnea index) fell by 25.3 vs 5.3 events per hour with placebo in the first trial, and by 29.3 vs 5.5 in the second.

Limitations

52 weeks. The benefit is thought to come largely from weight loss; whether it lasts after stopping was not tested.
