Tirzepatide versus insulin glargine in type 2 diabetes and increased cardiovascular risk (SURPASS-4): a randomised, open-label, parallel-group, multicentre, phase 3 trial
Del Prato S, Kahn SE, Pavo I, et al. The Lancet 2021;398:1811-1824.
What it found
In people with type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk, HbA1c fell by 2.43% (10 mg) and 2.58% (15 mg) vs 1.44% with glargine. Hypoglycaemia was less frequent with tirzepatide (6-9% vs 19%). Major cardiovascular events were not increased (hazard ratio 0.74, confidence interval crossing 1).
Limitations
Open-label. Not designed or powered as a cardiovascular outcome trial; see SURPASS-CVOT for that.
